Box Turtle Woods Conservation Area and Trails

Area:  6.44 acres, surrounded by approximately 43.1 acres of intertidal marsh conservation land.  The trail distance is 0.4 miles.

The marsh, as viewed from the pine grove on the trail, provides feeding habitat for the diamondback terrapin.  Mill Hill Island has a history dating back to industrial activity in the 1700s.

Directions:   Turn west on Lieutenant Island Road, which is 0.3 miles south of the Marconi entrance and 1.5 miles north of the Wellfleet/ Eastham town line.  Continue on Lieutenant Island Road for 0.6 miles to Compass Hill Road (dirt road).  Turn right and follow Compass Hill for 0.1 miles to a right onto Box Turtle Road.  Proceed downhill to a T-intersection.  Take a left and drive 0.1 miles to the parking area on the right.

Bayberry Hill Conservation Area

Area:  8.7 acres with a total trail distance of 0.4 miles.

The Bayberry Hill Conservation Area makes up the southeast border of a cluster of South Wellfleet conservation lands.   This is a good walking area in conjunction with a walk on Box Turtle Woods.  The nearby Bayberry Neck area, owned by the Wellfleet Conservation Trust, is a valuable section of salt and fresh marsh.  There are no trails on the Bayberry Neck area.

Directions:  Turn west on Lieutenant Island Road, which is 0.3 miles south of the Marconi entrance and 1.5 miles north of the Wellfleet/ Eastham town line.  Parking has not yet been established.
